Once more i drive to work
stuck in traffic like a berk

should have got the train,
didn't want to stand in the rain

so now i'm stuck on the 406 with a dead bum
from my uncomfortable seat, feeling glum
it normally takes 45 but now it's 90
minutes of my life wasted.

so be it.

i envy those
whose jobs are close
to where they live
so they can walk
to where they work

self-propelled into a 50 mile commute
I really shouldn't moan so much
no-one's forced me into this
but the shift premium ties me to it

before the lights, there are three
after there are two
lanes linking to one further ahead just to confuse

shame i can't night bus it
get there on travelcard
at 5 in the morning it'd be hard

the drones with the cones
restrict my movements
just trying to get from a to b
so bloody well move them

hidden behind my orange and white enemies
lies the no mans land of empty tarmac, where I'd rather be

when the day of graft is done, and it's time to come home
I may be hampered by a picnic
of workers and more cones

nearly sleeping at the wheel, suprised I'm not dead
needing my afternoon nap, but instead
stuck behind mothers in 4 wheel
drives from school runs
and more like me who didn't use tfl
apart from flower sellers, everyone finds the queues hell.

listening to the ipod
my tunes help calm nerves
try to keep me awake, stay aware of the curves
narrowly missing a shunt with the chap in front
open eyes just in time, hit the brakes, dodge the fine
ts10 from the cunting camera
unable to comply with the rules as i drive

On the way in on earlies
no traffic, roads are lovely
not many want to cruise at 5.30
caning it down the three lane
all going 70, even the police van
yes mr camera I am going 50

sexy bit of overtaking
passing slow gets
no need for frets or threats
best time of the day to listen to the X
laid back tunes, some new some old shit
rare chance to play in commercial air space

sending texts, legally dubious
to the dj, read it out please please
only a dozen listeners
at this time of peace

going a little to fast round empty curves
the sun is rising, london such a beatiful place
at this privileged time anyway

driving on the embankment
shame the journeys got to end
skirting the thames
then up through the west end
compare this to the hell 2 hours from now.

the few pleasures of being a shift worker
sacrificing evenings and sleep for what i'm not sure
moneys better
hardly a jet setter
afternoons to me
through tiredness they're not used productively
just get home eat and sleep
it agrees with the daddies though
collecting the little ones
from school, getting more time with them
must be a nightmare lack of eyes shut

Once I move up
a few grades, lifestyle will shift
away from early hours
and late lates
finally back on days
in an office but not in admin ways
using the brain and the mind
but for now,
I wait.
